What this is
A hashtag counter tallies how many hashtags a caption contains and measures that against each platform's published limit. It reads every token that begins with a hash symbol, ignores bare hashes and number-only tags, and counts what remains. Alongside the total it flags duplicates — repeats that still consume your quota without adding any reach.
How it works
A hashtag counts when the hash symbol is followed by at least one letter, digit or underscore, and it ends at a space, a punctuation mark or a line break. A hash inside a word does not count, and neither does a tag made only of digits — platforms treat both as plain text rather than a link.
Matching is case-insensitive, because platforms treat #Content and #content as the same tag. Writing both in one caption spends a slot for nothing, so the counter flags it as a duplicate.
The limits shown are the platforms' hard caps, not a recommended count. Instagram rejects a caption carrying more than 30 hashtags, while TikTok, YouTube and X constrain you through character length instead, so the numbers shown for those are practical ceilings rather than written rules.
How to use it
- Paste your caption Copy your whole caption, hashtags included, into the text box. A bare list of hashtags works too.
- Read the count and what's left The hashtag total and character count update as you type, next to how many hashtags each platform still allows.
- Clear the duplicates Any tag used more than once is listed under the results. Delete one of each to free up a slot.
Common questions
- How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?
- Instagram allows 30 hashtags per post, whether they sit in the caption or the first comment, and a caption carrying more than 30 is rejected on upload. The cap of 30 applies to the caption and comments of a single post combined.
- Do hashtags count towards the caption character limit?
- Yes — every character in a hashtag, the hash symbol included, counts towards the caption limit. That limit is 2,200 characters on Instagram, 2,200 on TikTok and 280 on X, so long tags eat noticeably into your writing space.
- Does putting hashtags in the first comment give me a separate quota?
- No — Instagram's cap of 30 applies to the post as a whole, not to each text field separately. Moving tags into the first comment only makes the caption look cleaner; the quota is unchanged.
- Are hashtags with capital letters counted separately?
- No — platforms match hashtags case-insensitively, so #ContentCreator and #contentcreator lead to the same page. Capitals are still worth using for readability in multi-word tags, and this counter treats both spellings as one and the same hashtag.
