YouTube Title Length Checker
Type your title to see which part reads in each surface, and which part gets cut.
What this is
A YouTube title length checker shows where a title gets cut across the places it appears. The formal cap is 100 characters, but that figure rarely matters: titles are truncated long before it in search results, in the suggested column, and above all on phone screens. What decides whether someone clicks is not your whole title but the part that actually reads — and that length differs by surface.
How it works
Truncation happens by pixel width rather than character count, so wide letters like W and M consume more room than i and l. A 60-character title in capitals cuts earlier than 60 characters of lowercase. This tool measures actual width rather than just counting characters.
The practical consequence is simple: put the words that decide the click at the front. A title that saves its point for the end loses exactly that part in the place where people decide whether to click.
How to use it
- Type your title Enter the title you are considering; its length is tracked as you type.
- Check each surface preview Each surface shows the part that reads, with the truncated remainder dimmed.
- Move your keyword forward If your most important word falls in the cut section, rearrange the title.
Common questions
- What is the YouTube title character limit?
- YouTube caps titles at 100 characters, and an upload with a longer one is rejected. Most surfaces show far less than that, though — on a phone, titles typically cut around 40 to 50 characters.
- What is the ideal YouTube title length?
- Around 50 to 60 characters usually reads in full across most surfaces, including desktop search results. Ordering matters more than length, though: make sure the words that earn the click sit in the first 40 characters.
- Why does my title cut earlier than someone else's?
- Because truncation is measured in pixels, not characters. A title with many capitals or wide letters like W and M takes more room, so it cuts earlier than another title with the same character count.
Notes
- Cut-off points are approximations — real widths vary by device and app version.
