What this is
Video tags are keywords the uploader adds behind the scenes; they are not visible on the video page. They are available through public data, so they can be read to see how a channel describes its own video. One thing worth stating up front: tags have a small influence on a video's reach, far smaller than the title, the thumbnail and watch time.
How it works
YouTube's entire tag field is capped at 500 characters — not per tag, but in total. This tool shows the running character count so you can see how much room is left, since that limit is usually reached before any tag count is.
Plenty of large channels use no tags at all, and that is not an oversight. Once a channel has a settled audience, tags add close to nothing. If you inspect a high-performing video and find zero tags, the right conclusion is not that tags are a secret — it is that tags were not what made it perform.
